{"id":527,"date":"2016-07-31T13:12:16","date_gmt":"2016-07-31T12:12:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.i3a.uclm.es\/raap\/?page_id=527"},"modified":"2018-05-10T07:53:44","modified_gmt":"2018-05-10T06:53:44","slug":"video-transcoding","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.i3a.uclm.es\/raap\/?page_id=527","title":{"rendered":"Video Transcoding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"s1\">In<\/span>\u00a0January 2013, the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC)\u00a0standard was established by the JCT-VC.\u00a0The new HEVC standard is a natural evolution of its\u00a0predecessor, namely H.264\/MPEG4 part 10 &#8211; Advanced Video\u00a0Coding (AVC) standard, which has dominated digital video\u00a0services in all segments of the domestic and professional\u00a0markets for over ten years. \u00a0While HEVC can bring respite to content producers, aggregators,\u00a0distributors and consumers with more quality content\u00a0at same bitrate, the adoption curve could still be years away.\u00a0In terms of rate-distortion (RD) performance, HEVC\u00a0roughly doubles the RD compression performance of\u00a0H.264\/AVC but at a cost of extremely high computational\u00a0and storage complexities during encoding. \u00a0Considering both the superior compression performance of\u00a0HEVC, as well as the large body of content that is currently\u00a0encoded using the H.264\/AVC standard, a transcoder that can\u00a0convert H.264\/AVC bitstreams into HEVC bitstreams is of\u00a0great value in many applications, especially before dedicated\u00a0HEVC encoder systems become widely available, while at the\u00a0same time various software based HEVC decoders have been\u00a0demonstrated . Furthermore, there is a wide availability of\u00a0H.264\/AVC encoders on the market with a good trade-off in\u00a0terms of RD performance and low cost.
